What Challenges You?
I set out this afternoon to find a new mountain to run. I am exploring the many mountain trails in Phoenix area before the summer heat sets in.
I discovered what looked to be a nice, sloping trail, with enough of a grade to make it interesting. Now when I first hit a trail it takes about 15 minutes for my brain to quiet down, being afflicted/blessed with an entrepreneur’s active brain.
I got half way up the mountain, and suddenly the trail turned to shale, loose gravel, and rocks – not at all ideal for running. In fact, the change in the trail forced me to focus on every step… concentrating on pulling in my abs, straightening my posture, relaxing my shoulders, and finding my center – choosing every step deliberately. I found that very quickly, my racing thoughts disappeared, as I was faced with the new task of navigating this mountain trail.
I got to the top of the mountain, and was greeted by a more welcoming trail down to the trailhead. Or so I thought. The downward trail down was even more treacherous, and even disappeared in spots where torrential rains had strewn rocks, sand, and gravel plummeting down the hillside.
My focus became complete as I watched for rattle snakes, and reminded myself to point my toes down on the gravel, so not to slip. I found every buried rock I could to grab onto with my shoes, thankful that I had bought mountain runners, designed to cling to rocky trails.
As I worked my way slowly downhill, I was overcome with this thought:
“The level of satisfaction you derive from completing something, is directly related to how much it challenges you.”
I believe this could apply to all areas of life. In business, I know when faced with a daunting challenge that I successfully navigate, I feel a deep sense of accomplishment and growth. Undoubtedly, the difficult trail today strengthened my core and calves, simply by choosing to take the path.
So I ask you… what path are you avoiding in your life, business, relationships, that – when successfully navigated – will fill your soul with a sense of accomplishment and growth?
I would love to hear your story.
As for me, I’m off to find another mountain…
